Tributes paid after sudden death of council leader

THE leader of Sandwell Council, Cllr Darren Cooper, died on Saturday, aged 52.

Mr Cooper had led the council for six years and had been a councillor in Smethwick for 25 years.

Cllr Steve Eling, the deputy leader who will assume the role of leader, said: “This is of course a terrible shock to everyone who knew Darren.

“He was hugely liked and respected by both his colleagues at the council and the constituents who he was dedicated to serving.”

Former Labour leader Ed Miliband tweeted: “Devastating news about Darren Cooper. He was one of a kind: in touch, charismatic, innovative, deeply loyal and a truly lovely man.”

Business and political leaders from across the West Midlands also paid tribute to Mr Cooper after his sudden death.

Leader of Birmingham City Council John Clancy said: “I was heartbroken to hear this morning about Darren’s passing away. I deeply valued his personal friendship and his steadfast personal support over many years. He was someone who I could go to for advice about anything and he’d give it with wisdom, humour and realism.

“I have lost a great friend. Sandwell has lost one its great sons, and Birmingham has lost one of its great allies. We all feel lost today. The political and economic life of the West Midlands is also much the poorer for his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with Karen and the family: my heart goes out to them this Easter.”

Cllr Roger Lawrence, chair of the West Midlands Integrated Transport Authority (ITA), added: “This is dreadful news and a complete shock to all of us at the ITA.

“Darren Cooper was a dedicated, hardworking councillor and a much valued and respected colleague.”
