5 ways an interview is like a first date

Applying for a job is definitely not on the same page as a first date, but there are plenty of similarities between the two.

1) You’re very, very nervous
Of course you’re nervous! You want the job and let’s face it, you probably wouldn’t mind a relationship with a special someone too. So you panic and you may even get sweaty hands – we won’t judge you, it’s happened to us too. Then, the meeting point, do you shake hands? Do you smile and be really talkative? It’s really that stressful.

2)  Do your research
Before a job interview, you look into the company and make sure you know as much as you can. Similarly, with a first date, you’ve probably asked all your mates if this person is decent and doesn’t have anything to hide. If you’ve been speaking to him online, you’ve googled their name or searched them on Facebook to either make sure they’re real and not a criminal.

3) Look your best
Perhaps one of the most nerve-wracking parts of any interview or date, choosing your outfit. You have to make sure you look the part and present the right image. Do you choose to be more formal and dressed up, or a bit more casual. But what about if the office turns out to be super relaxed or you end up in an absolute dive of a bar?!

4) Watch what you’re saying
You don’t want to give too much of yourself away. It’s best not to talk about the past too much, the fallings-out and the failings. So you attempt to charm your way through any questions and try not to embarrass yourself too much.

5) You’re unsure if you’ll see each other again
There’s that awkwardness in the air of any interview or first date, where you’re both unsure if the other one likes you and if you’ll be back. If you really like the other person, or would love the job, you try and act coy and not too desperate – well, you try!
