Travel Alert: Severe delays on M6 after accident

5.30pm Update

MOTORISTS are still being warned of long delays on the M6 near Birmingham following a serious accident.

The accident, which involves an overturned vehicle, is currently affecting the southbound stretch of the motorway between junctions 8 (the exit for the M5) and 7 (Great Barr).

Queuing traffic is already said to be stretching back to Junction 10a, the exit for the M54.

The hard shoulder and inside lane are both closed and highways authorities have revised their earlier estimate to say the scene is not expected to return to normal until around 8pm.

With the onset of rush-hour congestion is expected to worsen on both the motorway and approach roads in the Walsall and Wednesbury area.

There are also reports of slow moving traffic on the northbound carriageway close to the scene as drivers slow to see what is happening.
