Roofer acquisition creates £200m-turnover group

A £200M business has been created following the acquisition of timber roofing supplier John Brash & Co by another roofer, Marley Eternit.

The Staffordshire business has acquired John Brash & Co, based in Gainsborough, South Yorkshire, in a deal worth £13m.

John Brash, which manufactures cedar roof shingles, timber decking and scaffold boards, will become integrated into Marley Eternit and the Gainsborough site will be retained.

Following the acquisition, Paul Reed will become managing director of the new timber products range within Marley Eternit.

Former John Brash managing director Chris Watson will take on the role of chairman, following the departure of Christian Brash, who will leave the business.

Christian Brash, chairman of John Brash & Co, commented: “Whilst we are sad to see the end of 110 years of ownership by the Brash family, we believe that the business has been left in a fantastic position as the UK’s market leader in roofing battens.

“The acquisition by Marley should only help strengthen this through the synergies between the two businesses and the combined strengths of both brands in the market.”

John Brash shareholders were advised by Rory Wade, Dave Irwin and John O’Gara of Sentio Partners with legal advice being delivered by Philip Ashworth, Matthew Smith and Grace Howell from the York office of Andrew Jackson Solicitors. Tax advice was delivered by Andrew Mould of RSM.
