Sensational developments at Aston Villa post relegation

NEW board members at Aston Villa – Mervyn King and David Bernstein – have resigned from the club in the wake of its relegation from the Premier League.

But there is fresh speculation tonight that a deal over the sale of the club might be close.

Sky Sports News had earlier reported that both men had quit the Villa Park club.

The situation has later confirmed by the club.

In a statement it said: “It is with regret that Aston Villa Football Club announces the resignations of Mervyn King and David Bernstein as directors of the club.

“The club would like to thank both for all their efforts throughout their short time as members of the board.”

Separately, the statement says chairman Steve Hollis is “currently engaged in extensive negotiations in relation to the sale of the club”.

Former Manchester City chief Mr Bernstein and the former Bank of England governor only joined the club last month.

They were working with popular former player and manager Brian Little to turn around the on field performance.
