What you need to know about the class of 2016

Final year students are coming to the end of their studies and they will be graduating this summer. If your business is on the lookout for fresh new talent, you should consider putting yourself out there now as they have already started applying for roles and opportunities. If you’re unsure of what to expect, a recent study by Accenture Strategy discovered what you need to know about this year’s graduates.

They won’t find you unless you put yourself out there
If you’re only advertising on your website, don’t expect candidates to find the role unless you’re a big company. Graduates are relying on mobile apps to find them a job, so unless you put yourself out there and make sure your role is on the best job search apps, the class of 2016 won’t be applying.

Values mean something
You don’t need to be on the brink of revolution, but a whopping 92% of soon-to-be-graduates said that it’s important for them to work somewhere that is making demonstrable effort to improve the world. Initiatives like volunteering and charity opportunities and recycling in the office go a long way.

They’re expecting to learn on the job
Although they have done all sorts at university, they know this doesn’t necessarily mean that they are completely ready for the world of work. Over 80% of the class of 2016 are expecting to receive formal training in their first role. However, only 54% of last year’s graduates received training at their first job.

They are OK with a low salary (well, sort of)
The study found that 70% of soon-to-be-grads would take a smaller salary if it meant that they could work in a more fun and social environment. However, given that many think that they will earn £25,000 in their first job, so they might need a reality check in the weeks and months ahead.

You’ll have less to choose from
In 2015 only 12% of final year students had a job lined up for when they finished their studies. This year however, almost a quarter of students have a job lined up before they even officially graduate. This means you’ll have fewer to choose from for your organisation, so you’ll probably have to be a bit less picky this year.

They have a lot of experience
Universities nowadays encourage students to take internships on during their studies and get experience where they can. An impressive 68% of this year’s graduates have completed an internship alongside their studies. This means that they have a good idea of the industry and what will be expected from them. This also means that they’ll be more independent workers and will be able to get on with the task at hand.
