Fire breaks out at Black Country recycling yard

A large blaze which could be seen across the Black Country sky broke out at a recycling yard yesterday.

Over 70 firefighters tackled the flames off Rufford Street in Lye after residents in the area reported heavy smoke to emergency services at around 12pm yesterday.

The fire happened in the yard of Environcom recycling plant near Stourbridge Road before spreading to nearby Stratstone Land Rover and Richmond car hire.

Firefighters remained at the scene in Lye into the evening after tackling the blaze for over six hours.

It is not believed anybody has been injured in the blaze and the fire is not currently being treated as suspicious as investigations are ongoing.

The fire involved a large quantity of rubbish including plastics, foams and wood on open ground and local residents were told to keep windows closed. They were also advised that there may be a drop in water pressure due to the fire crew using a lot of the supply from pumps on Stourbridge Road.
