Casino operator set to close Birmingham venue

CASINO operator Genting could be set to close one of its prime sites in Birmingham as the company considers its future.

220 people are employed at the Star City venue, but the company is set to focus on its prime casino site in the region, the £150m Resorts World Birmingham complex, next to the NEC.

Separately, Genting has begun the process of relocating support staff from its office in Liverpool to Birmingham.

Staff at Star City are now being consulted over the changes and the company has said it will make a formal announcement in due course. However, it is thought the Star City venue could close as soon as January next year.

In a statement the company said: “Genting UK are constantly reviewing their business to ensure they can offer the best possible facilities to customers and staff in the most efficient way.

“We are also considering the future of our Star City casino in Birmingham. It operates in the shadow of our Resorts World facility, which offers some of the best leisure facilities in the world including an international casino, hotel and shopping centre.”

The Star City venue originally opened in 2003, three years after the opening of the main entertainment complex.

The casino is described on the company’s website as being one of the largest in the UK with a 70,000 sq ft site arranged over several floors and featuring state of the art facilities including gaming tables, slot machines and automated games.

However, the venue’s popularity is thought to have waned, especially with the opening of the Resorts World facility in October last year.
