Browne Jacobson raids city rival to bolster IP team

Law firm Browne Jacobson has raided one of its Birmingham rivals to bolster its intellectual property practice.
Partner Cerryg Jones, who has defected from Gowling WLG, will split his time between the firm’s Birmingham and London offices.
His appointment brings more than 20 years’ experience in intellectual property infringement matters, litigation, risk management, mediation and dispute resolution in relation to brand and designs. He also has experience in handling matters on trademarks, copyrights, designs, trade secrets and confidential information.
Mr Jones has been involved in some very high profile trademark infringement cases including acting for the owner of the Glee Club comedy and music group owner, Comic Enterprises in its well documented dispute with Twentieth Century Fox over the TV programme ‘Glee’, which was found by the High Court and the Court of Appeal to have infringed Comic Enterprises registered trade mark.
He was also instructed by Unilever in various intellectual property disputes, including a high-profile dispute with the BNP in which he helped secure an interim injunction to prevent the BNP using the iconic Marmite brand in party political broadcasts.
Declan Cushley, partner and head of Browne Jacobson’s commercial and intellectual property team, said: “Cerryg’s arrival is a real coup for our IP practice. He is considered one of the best brand and IP litigation lawyers in the country and his experience and knowledge will be a real asset to our already thriving team.
“Our specialist IP practice continues to attract some of the best and most ambitious IP talent in the UK and Cerryg is full proof of that.
“His appointment supports our strategic commitment to provide a full suite of IP services from industry leading experts to our regional, national and international client base.”
Over the last 18 months, the firm has added to its credentials with the hire of some key commercial IP practitioners including partners Selina Hinchliffe from Eversheds, Mark Gleeson from Squire Patton Boggs and Kathleen Fox-Murphy from Taylor Wessing.
