Yorkshire company delivers Down Under

A YORKSHIRE company which specialises in minimising environmental impact within the sewerage and drainage industries has carried out work to renovate a power station at a world heritage site in Tasmania.

Barnsley-based Fernco Environmental was tasked with improving the hydraulic performance of the Liawenee Flume and protecting the surface from further erosion using Ultracoat, a waterproof and structurally reinforcing adhesive used to rehabilitate drainage infrastructure.

As a result of Fernco Environmental’s renovation, the water flow rate to the power station has improved by 55%, increasing the efficiency of power generation.

The Liawenee Flume, constructed in 1921 in the central highlands of Tasmania, an island 150 miles South of Australia, forms a crucial part of the power generation infrastructure on the island, as 100% of the island’s electricity supply is generated by a 30MW hydroelectric power station.

Jon Crean, managing director at Fernco Environmental, said: “The project at the Liawenee Flume was extremely successful and shows the advantages and flexibility of the Ultracoat solution. We are looking forward to completing more projects like this in the future.”

Fernco Environmental was established in 2007 as part of the Fernco Group, which also includes Sheffield-based Flexseal.
