Shooting stars for Yorkshire restaurants

YORKSHIRE chef Simon Gueller who owns the Box Tree in Ilkley has been awarded a coveted Michelin Star for the fourth year in a row but two regional restaurants have lost their stars.

It sees the Box Tree, run by Mr Gueller and his wife Rena, become the only Michelin Star restaurant in West Yorkshire. Meanwhile the Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey and Winteringham Fields in North Lincolnshire have lost their one-star status in the new Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2008 which is launched tomorrow.

This year's guide, which includes 15 new one star restaurants, sees The Star at Harome and the Yorke Arms at Ramsgill, both in North Yorkshire, retain their one star status.

Meanwhile two restaurants in the UK gain three stars in the guide – The Fat Duck at Bray, Berkshire and Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea.

This year's guide also includes 33 new Bib Gourmand establishments, offering 'good food at moderate prices' – three courses for less than £28 which includes a clutch in Yorkshire.

They are Brasserie 44 and Anthony's at Flannels in Leeds, The General Tarleton Inn at Ferrensby and the diningroom at Boroughbridge, both in North Yorkshire, and The Pipe & Glass Inn near Beverley.

“To achieve a Michelin Star here at the Box Tree for the fourth year running is very satisfying,” said Mr Gueller. “This year I think we've worked even harder to ensure the restaurant retains its reputation as one of the best in the country and I'm delighted with this award, which definitely makes all the effort seem worthwhile!”

Simon held a Michelin Star at each of his two previous restaurants, making him the only chef to have achieved Michelin status three times in Yorkshire. In 2007, the restaurant also received a rare rave review from the fiery Marco Pierre White who named the Box Tree as his “favourite restaurant in Britain”.
