Draft plans outlined for 119,000 sq ft of logistics space

A public consultation is being launched by Keyland Developments for draft plans to deliver 119,000 sq ft of commercial and employment space on land south of the Interchange 26 commercial site, North Bierley.

The proposals for logistics warehouses follow the first phase of the site, which is now known as Interchange 26 and will provide employment space to stimulate the local economy and provide job opportunities.

Residents will be able to view the draft plans and provide feedback. Consultation materials can be accessed at www.northbierleyphase2.co.uk.

Planning permission was secured in 2018 for a commercial development at the site and is now being delivered as “Interchange 26” by Opus North and Tungsten Developments. This land is allocated for development under the Kirklees Local Plan.

This latest proposed development, which is adjacent to the Interchange 26 site, would effectively be an extension to the consented scheme.

Highways England previously considered there would need to be major junction enhancements at Chain Bar, including a new flyover from the M62 to the M606 which would bypass the Chain Bar roundabout altogether.

However, that highways improvement is no longer being pursued as it is not considered to offer the same benefits that were envisaged when the improvement was devised.

Matthew Turnbull, planning and development manager at Keyland Developments, said: “We are excited to launch this public consultation and welcome as much feedback as possible at this early stage in the process to help inform the plans.

“These proposals would deliver over 100 new jobs for local people and provide a major investment in the Kirklees economy at an already operational site.”

A planning application will be submitted following analysis of feedback from the consultation.
