Barker Proudlove shops for success with growth strategy

FORMER King Sturge partner Jonathan Newns has joined retail property consultancy Barker Proudlove as the business accelerates its plans to grow further following a successful first 18 months of trading.

Mr Newns has also been joined at the Leeds-based operation, run by Richard Barker and Mark Proudlove, by Grant Owens, who has left GVA in Manchester to team up with the growing practice.

Mr Newns spent almost nine years at King Sturge but said he wanted a new challenge following the property services firm’s recent deal with Jones Lang LaSalle.

And he believes Barker Proudlove, which was established in 2010, is set to become a leading player in its field across the North of England.

He has brought key clients across to Barker Proudlove, including The Victoria Quarter shopping centre in Leeds.

Mr Proudlove said the appointment of Mr Newns reflected Barker Proudlove’s growing standing and reputation in the market.

He said: “We’ve enjoyed a solid start during our first 18 months of trading. The key to our success has been retaining and developing our original clients and business from our previous roles.

“It’s all been about looking after our existing clients and working hard. We’ve then had other, new work, referred to us by our clients.”

Based in Bruntwood’s West One in Leeds, the company specialises in retail agency providing leasing, tenant acquisition, disposal and strategic asset management advice to clients on their shopping centre and high street property holdings, principally throughout Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, the North East, North West and East Midlands.

Key leasing instructions in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire include the Kingsgate Shopping Centre, Huddersfield, Freshney Place Shopping Centre in Grimsby, Queens Arcade and West Riding House in Leeds and The Princess of Wales Shopping Centre in Dewsbury.

Mr Proudlove said Mr Newns brings a wealth of sector experience in the retail space and would help the business win new work.

“Jonathan will make sure our clients are getting the right quality and specialism,” Mr Proudlove said. “However, we want to continue doing what we’ve done well to date.

Mr Newns said: “I’m really excited about joining Barker Proudlove. We want to be the market leaders in the high street and shopping centre market. And we want to be the first port of call for the big funders.”

Mr Barker and Mr Proudlove previously worked at DTZ in its Manchester and Leeds offices and have more than 20 years combined experience in the retail market.
