Work carries on at new £90m city retail and stadium development

THE next stage of work at the £90m Vangarde development in York has begun.

The project is set to deliver 1,000 new jobs to the city and provide significant funding for the new 6,000 seat Community Stadium – the proposed new home to York City FC and the York City Knights.

Work on site, being carried out by Caddick Construction, is progressing, with the steel frames already erected on the main development which is set to become home to a flagship Marks & Spencer, Next and the city’s first John Lewis store.

A number of new lettings have been agreed bringing well-known brands to Monks Cross, including Costa Coffee and Frankie & Benny’s. Costa has agreed a deal on a 1,600 sq ft unit and Frankie & Benny’s will move into a 4,000 sq ft space in the kiosk and restaurant space.

CBRE is advising Oakgate Group on the lettings and will be making further announcements on additional new occupiers shortly.

Richard France, managing director of the Oakgate Group, said: “It’s great to see the Vangarde Retail Park taking shape. We have already completed some exciting deals, bringing John Lewis to Yorkshire, as well as top brands such as M&S, Next, Costa and Frankie & Benny’s.

“We have received a great deal of interest in the site and we are in the final stages of completing a number of other lettings to announce in the next few weeks.”

Throughout October, Caddick Construction’s team will be undertaking cladding to the steel frames and the floors will be laid with concrete.

Neil Lindley, project manager, at Caddick Construction, said: “We are delighted with the progress being made on site. The development is on schedule and by the end of October the retail units will be taking shape and fit outs of the individual stores will begin.

“Over the past few months, the team has been working extremely hard to deliver each stage of the build in line with the programme. As well as the main site itself, the landscaping and roadworks surrounding the retail park are also taking shape.”

The Oakgate Group, which is part owned by Caddick Group, started work in May on the development. It is set to open in Easter 2014.

The Vangarde development secured outline planning permission from City of York Council in July 2012.
