NG Bailey lands contract for flagship university building

NG Bailey has won a contract worth £12.5m to provide the mechanical and electrical services for a state-of-the-art undergraduate teaching facility at the University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Engineering.

The Ilkley-based independent engineering, IT and facilities services business will help develop the landmark building on the University’s Jessop East site.

The six-storey facility will include lecture theatres, laboratories and various flexible teaching rooms.

Working alongside main contractor Balfour Beatty, NG Bailey will be responsible for all M&E services, including ventilation and cooling systems, offsite-manufactured risers and pipework skid modules within the plant rooms.

NG Bailey’s offsite manufacture division cemented its place as part of the team after producing a scale model demonstrating an innovative solution to the prefabricated risers at tender stage.

The company’s IT division will provide the infrastructure cabling for a building management system (BMS) incorporating SMART building technology.

This is the third project won by the company at the University of Sheffield and is expected to be completed in August 2015.

Keith Lilley, director of estates and facilities management at the University of Sheffield, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to underpin the university’s commitment to making significant reductions to its carbon footprint through the development of modern and energy-efficient buildings.

“We’re very excited about the potential for creating a building which is highly energy-efficient, particularly given the type of functions it will be used for. And in an innovative development we’ll be creating an app which will allow students in the building to see in real time exactly how much water, electricity, heating and lighting we’re using, so it’s absolutely vital that the systems installed give us the greatest possible potential for sustainable carbon reduction.”

Mike Darlington, joint managing director of NG Bailey’s engineering division, said: “It will be a brilliant new facility for the university and will support the increasing demand from students for engineering places. Sheffield has a great reputation for its engineering courses, and the new building will really enhance the teaching and learning environment.”
