Vision and strategy vital Asian firms told

A LEADING South Yorkshire entrepreneur is urging businesses to take professional advice to ensure they have strong strategic plans in place for the next five years.

Nadeem Shah, chairman of Doncaster-based Vigo Group, was speaking at a dinner organised by Business Link Yorkshire to hear the views of successful Asian companies.

He told the audience of 20 business owners: “In my own company, we have recently had to make difficult choices and big cuts. We are now rebuilding the business in different ways and I’m paying for the best professional advice to help with our mission and strategic plan for the next five years.

“Culturally, Asian businesses do not look for outside help or plan far ahead. It’s really important to change this attitude, particularly in the current economy, and Business Link is well positioned to offer this support.”

The dinner was one of a series of consultation events across the region to identify specific issues facing Asian businesses. Business Link will use the feedback to develop its services and marketing.

Kevin Smith, a Business Link adviser at the dinner, said: “Our advisers are there to help businesses getting started and any established business with plans to grow or do things differently.

“All our advice is free and impartial, though businesses may have to pay if they need specialist advice such as help with a marketing strategy or a new website – but we can also find the right people to do this.”

Mr Shah added that there is funding in the market: “Banks are lending – I’ve had three deals funded this month. But you’ve got to have a strong strategic vision and plan.”
