Leisure firm Blue Sky buys another park

BLUE Sky Resorts, the fast-growing Wakefield-based leisure company, has acquired its fourth holiday park – Spring Willows at Staxton, near Scarborough – for an undisclosed sum.

The popular, established 40-acre site with an indoor swimming pool has fully-serviced stands for 56 static caravans and 58 touring vans, as well as another 14 unserviced pitches for casual users.

Blue Sky Resorts, which was launched in 2004 with the acquisition of Nostell Priory Holiday Park, now operates four small, high-quality holiday parks in Yorkshire and Northumberland. It employs more than 40 team members.

Blue Sky director Mark Alston said: “We already had the contract to sell caravans on the site and knew it well, so we were delighted to step in when the opportunity came to acquire the holiday park.

“The park is attractively landscaped but we now plan to invest a significant amount to bring it up to the same five-star standard as our other sites, and to make it more ecologically-friendly. Our aim is for Spring Willows to win a David Bellamy Gold Award.”

The park’s new general manager, Ian Clark, added: “Since the takeover, we have become one of only a handful of holiday parks to buy and install a purpose-built caravan for disabled people.”

The two-bedroom caravan has a ramp for wheelchair access, together with such facilities as extra wide doorways, lower worktops and handrails. Middlesbrough Borough Council has already agreed to rent the caravan for an initial period of five years so it can provide holidays for disabled residents.

Following the acquisition, Blue Sky Resorts has created two new posts at the park, recruiting Mr Clark and an extra groundsman.
