Hull scoops top architecture awards

TWO of Hull’s most famous landmarks have taken top honours in this year’s Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Yorkshire White Rose Awards.

Hull Truck Theatre was named Building of the Year. The architects behind the project were London-based Wright and Wright Architects.

The Queens Centre for Oncology & Haematology was named Client of the Year. Sheffield-based HLM Architects was responsible for the building’s design.

Padd 55 in Pickering took silver while One Brewery Wharf in Leeds was awarded bronze.

The Small Project Award, which is awarded to projects with a contract value below £250,000, was presented to Porter Lodge interpretation centre at Fountains Abbey near Ripon and Woodhall Planning and Conservation in Leeds.

Two schemes were acknowledged as deserving for the Conservation Award with the Royal Hall in Harrogate taking gold. Leeds City Museum was awarded silver.

The Landscape Architecture Award, which is presented in partnership with Landscape Institute Yorkshire & Humber branch, was awarded to Golder Associates for the restoration and enhancement of Shibden Park in Halifax and HLM Architects for the Queens Centre for Oncology & Haemotology.

The Sustainable Futures Award was won by The Hull Truck Theatre -Wright and Wright Architects, and Padd 55 – Bramhall Blenkharn.

Emma England, regional director of RIBA Yorkshire, said: “It’s really exciting to see how the different Yorkshire towns and cities are developing, with clients investing in good quality architecture.

“This year Hull has made its mark with two outstanding, yet completely different building types.”

She added: “Its Queens Centre for Oncology & Haematology is particularly impressive, as it is a very rare example of an excellent piece of architecture being achieved through a notoriously difficult PFI procurement process.”
