York office building has got the edge

A BUILDING has been constructed for the first time in the UK using a brick system which doesn't require mortar.

The Edge in York has been created using the ClickBrick system, which has been pioneered in Holland.

The bricks, made by Dutch company Daas Baksteen, are clicked together without mortar and can be laid in all weather conditions.

The system, which was used for the first time in the UK during the build, helped the site's main contractor, Shepherd Construction, meet the eight month building schedule for the 14,500 sq ft office building at Hospital Fields Road in Fulford.

The £3.5m two-storey development has parking for 34 cars and 25 cycles.

Richard Squire, project director of Shepherd Developments, part of York-based Shepherd Group, said: “The Edge is a really exciting and pioneering project, the like of which York has never seen.

“The fact that we built it speculatively is a massive vote of confidence in the York market. There is currently a shortage of Grade A office space in the city and we are confident that The Edge fulfils a need.”

Miles Lawrence of York-based letting agents Lawrence Hannah, said: “This is one of the most exciting speculative office developments in York for years. Its bold and contemporary design, combined with its excellent internal facilities and superb location, is a winning combination.”

Leeds-based architects Sturgeon North designed the interior and exterior of The Edge.
