In the absence of bonuses say it with flowers or vouchers

CASH-strapped firms can reward staff with cost-effective gestures this Christmas in the absence of financial bonuses.

According to Yorkshire-based HR advice and support consultancy hr180 bosses can still motivate staff without having to break the bank.

Founder Claire Morley-Jones said that delivering the unexpected such as theatre vouchers, a meal out or a family fun day or spa vouchers can do much to relieve tension and stress.

Holding company awards can also help encourage performance as well as giving clever gifts such as hampers, which are perceived to be high value but can be put together cost effectively.

“Implement things such as letting employees leave work early for Christmas shopping or give a few days extra off over the festive period,” she added.

“Being able to spend more time with family is one of the most important part of Christmas for many people. If you don’t already provide flexible working, consider offering it in the run-up to Christmas. It can go a long way toward boosting employee engagement and overall satisfaction at work.”

According to Ms Morley-Jones a well fed employee is a happy one and she recommends offering free drinks and destive treats in the run up to Christmas.

Other initiatives include offering staff access to retail discount schemes from paper vouchers to virtual banks and pre-pay cards, which employees can then use to purchase discounted goods in time for Christmas at a range of high street retailers and supermarkets.

Managers can also choose to introduce government-backed salary sacrifice schemes for the new year where staff can choose to have money deducted to pay for services such as childcare, bicycles and public transport.

However, Ms Morley-Jones has some more unusual moral-boosting ideas.

“Something as simple as buying bunches of flowers, chocolates or bottles of wine for your employees’ significant others can build goodwill and show apprecitation for loyalty and commitment,” she said.

“And don’t underestimate a simple thank you. A personal acknowledgement by managers can be the most appreciated reward and doesn’t cost anything. Take this a step further by handwriting a thank you note to employees who deserve recognition.”
