The Energy Sector: Leading the green energy revolution

YORKSHIRE and the Humber are at the forefront of the development of the new technologies which will help meet the UK’s future energy needs but with a much lower impact on the environment.

In fact, some of the technologies being pioneered in this region build on Yorkshire’s energy sector heritage.

Coal, for many years dismissed as a dirty fuel of the past, is making its comeback in Yorkshire. A region once synonymous with mining coal is now leading the way in showing how it can play an important role in the future of power regeneration.

In-depth analysis on this subject, and other key issues the energy sector, can be read in the supplement, in association with law firm Addleshaw Goddard, which is available to download.

Examples of innovative energy schemes in Yorkshire include Scottish and Southern Energy trialling carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology at Ferrybridge Power Station in a collaboration with Doosan Power Systems and Vattenfall.

Further south, 2Co Energy is pressing ahead for plans for one of the most advanced CCS projects in the world.

The Don Valley Power Project will see 900MW of power generated each year with the carbon dioxide transported via pipeline to the North Sea where it can be used to extract oil using a technique known as enhanced oil recovery.

And projects on the Humber, including Siemens negotiating to build a new turbine manufacturing plant on the Green Port Hull site, are also helping the region set the pace.

Other issues explored in the supplement include an assessment of the region’s future energy needs; the regulatory pressures on the sector; and a round table discussion on the opportunities in this region.
