M62 traffic congestion contract won

UPGRADE work is to be undertaken along a stretch of the M62 in West Yorkshire after Morgan Sindall won a £136m highways infrastructure contract as part of its joint venture with BAM Nuttall.

The project will see the construction and infrastructure firm, a division of the Morgan Sindall Group, undertake upgrade work between junctions 25 and 30 of the motorway.

The junctions run between Brighouse and Rothwell.

Morgan Sindall has formed a 50/50 joint venture with Surrey-based BAM Nuttall called ‘bmJV’ and this award is aimed at easing traffic congestion on the motorway.

Work will include adapting sections of the hard shoulder with resurfacing and drainage improvements for use as either permanent or peak period additional lanes.

Construction is due to start in the last quarter of 2011 and be completed by 2014.

It is part of the Highways Agency’s £2bn, four-year framework to deliver managed motorways across England on which bmJV secured a place on the framework in February last year.

Morgan Sindall Group chief executive Paul Smith said: “This award underlines our strength in the highways sector, where we have an excellent track record and are already delivering a range of projects to modernise the motorway network in the UK.

“It also highlights the value of securing positions on major frameworks, which help to provide visibility and security of earnings.”
