Former Ski Village site set for leisure proposals as deadline is extended

The deadline to take on the former Ski Village site in Sheffield for development has been extended after “very strong demand.”
Sheffield City Council said it had agreed to a short extension to allow potential investors to finalise their proposals for the 370 acre site.
It said it expected “a number” of initial bids to develop Parkwood, incorporating the Ski Village, which was formerly the largest artificial ski resort in Europe, until it was destroyed by fire in 2012.
The deadline has now been extended by two weeks to Friday 21 April.
The brief is to create a “nationally-significant” attraction at Parkwood Springs as part of the council’s “Outdoor City” plans.
A mountain biking trail centre, urban bike park or national snow sports centre could be on the cards, or a combination of different adventure activities, depending on market interest.
Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We have been very pleased with the level of interest and discussion that has been generated for the former Ski Village site.
“There is no mistaking the importance this site holds for generations of athletes who learnt to ski and snowboard on its slopes, with many going on to achieve Winter Olympic success.
“In order to continue that proud history, and because we are encouraged by the expressions of interest we have received, we have agreed to requests to extend the deadline for a short period so that we can ensure the strongest proposals moving forward.”
