A new senior solicitor has been appointed to the commercial property team at Newtons Solicitors.

Sophie Barton joins Newtons’ head office in Knaresborough, after 15 years at Berwins Solicitors in Harrogate.

Barton qualified as a solicitor working in-house with B&N Housing, now Accent Housing, in Baildon; carrying out a range of legal work. She then moved to Berwins to specialise in commercial property.

She focuses on a range of commercial property work including landlord and tenant issues, leases to commercial freehold, sales and purchases, commercial mortgages and agricultural property matters.

Barton says: “I am delighted to have joined Newtons. The company’s forward-thinking and progressive approach has earned it a strong reputation across the region. I am looking forward to being part of the expanding property team.“

She is the third senior solicitor to join Newtons this year and her appointment takes the firm’s commercial property team to eight.

Newtons Solicitors managing director, Chris Newton, added: “Many of us have worked with Sophie before and know of her strong reputation. We’re therefore delighted to have a former colleague and highly-respected solicitor on our team.”

Harrogate property firm FSS has boosted its lettings department with the appointment of Julie Day.

Day has worked in the Yorkshire lettings market for many years and joins the firm as an additional residential lettings negotiator.

Simon Croft, partner at FSS, said the firm’s no commission ethos was helping to attract experienced staff to the team.

He said: “Candidates who apply for jobs at FSS tell us time and again that they like the fact that they are encouraged to help buyers and tenants find the property that’s right for them rather than being influenced by commission.

“We believe this improves the quality of our service and our reputation in the local market.”
