Demolition date set for Headingley stadium stand

Demolition will start later this year at Headingley Stadium’s South Stand as the long-awaited development gets underway.

The demolition date is set for August according to rugby league team Leeds Rhinos, with the final game with the stand in place set for 18 August.

Leeds Rhinos and the Yorkshire County Cricket Club have also announced that research business the Emerald Group has acquired the naming rights to Headingley Stadium from November 2017.

The North-South stand will be renamed the Emerald Stand when it completes in 2019.

The South Stand, which was opened in 1931, will be demolished to make for a new and improved development, with the Main Stand following suit in September.

The work is part of a £35m deal signed by Leeds City Council for a private investor to fund the redevelopment of the rugby and cricket stadium. Leeds Rhinos have also agreed to invest £5m in the site.

The development faced uncertainty earlier this year with the council unable to stump up the costs until an unnamed third party investor stepped in.

The council said this would secure “top level international sport at Headingley” – it is due to host four matches at the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
