People: York Science Park welcomes former Hiscox COO as board member; Knight Frank head appointed by planning firm; and more

York Science Park has welcomed Alan Millard, the former COO of Hiscox UK, to its board of directors.

Millard was the chief operations officer for Hiscox UK from 2005 to 2017, and as part of his role he was responsible for the development of organisational strategy, initiatives and projects, along with all operations.

Millard also sits on the board of a range of businesses, including the Table Group and DueDil, along with lecturing on innovation and ethical leadership at York St John University.

He also has extensive knowledge of startup and SME support, having managed the Hiscox Futures programme, and the development of the Hiscox Business Club.

Millard said: “I am very passionate about innovation and I am excited to see some of the creative work being carried out by Science Park residents. I have joined the board to help York Science Park give local entrepreneurs and businesses the best chance to turn their great ideas into commercial reality.”

Rural planning and advisory firm Rural Solutions has brought on board James Del Mar, who joins as executive director.

Having worked in rural planning and development for more than 25 years, Del Mar joins Skipton-based Rural Solutions from Knight Frank, where he was head of rural consultancy for the past eight years.

He said: “My move to Rural Solutions is in direct response to wanting to be with a dedicated rural property and business advisory team.

“Rural Solutions is the only UK rural professional service provider which focusses exclusively on rural business ownership, operation, development strategy and diversification.

Sheffield-based Fulcrum has recruited three-experienced utility industry business development managers to further strengthen its national sales force.

Dave Shaw, Sally Appleyard and Drew Tarantiuk will reinforce Fulcrum’s existing business development team, while working to secure new contracts in the industrial and commercial and housing markets.

The company designs and delivers gas, electricity and water pipelines and connections. In its audited preliminary results for the year ending 31 March 2017, Fulcrum has seen revenue rise to £37.7m, an increase of 4.4% on the previous financial year (£36.1m), with profits before tax of £6.5m, compared to £4.3m in 2016.
