Construction firm bags trio of contracts worth £20m

Henry Boot Construction has secured three projects worth £20m, including St George’s Concert Hall in Bradford and the University of Hull Sports development.

Site teams will deliver a £9m project to construct the University of Hull Sports Development Phase 2 which will start this month, and forms part of the university’s £16m total investment to boost sports facilities at its Cottingham Road campus.

Work includes the design, construction and management of a new 12 court sports hall, and reconfiguration of the existing Grade II listed sports centre and squash courts.

Phase 1, due for completion this summer, will see Henry Boot Construction deliver a new sports pavilion as part of a £3.5m investment in to the sports grounds which included a new 3G pitch and the refurbishment of two existing pitches at the site.

The second project is a £6m contract to transform the historic St George’s Concert Hall in Bradford. The Grade II listed building, located on Bridge Street in the heart of the city, first opened its doors in 1853 and is one of the oldest concert halls still in use in the UK.

Tony Shaw, operations director at Henry Boot Construction, said: “We’re tasked with delivering a full refurbishment of the auditorium and front-of-house areas, as well as carrying out much-needed external improvements and repairs. Internally, we will refurbish the auditorium seating, raise the circle and upper gallery seating levels and remove and replace the existing stage. Externally, our work will focus on extensive stone repairs and replacement of the slate roof and timber windows.”

It is expected that the entire project will be complete by the end of 2018.

The third contract to be awarded is a £5m design and construction project to create a National Centre in Combustion and Aerothermal Technology at Loughborough University.

Funded through a partnership between Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Aerospace Technology Institute and Innovate UK, the centre will focus on the development of future low emission aerospace combustion systems designed to reduce the environmental impact of aircraft. Rolls-Royce will be a lead partner in the project.
