Last chance to see acclaimed artist’s work in Sheffield

Locals will have their last opportunity to see a newly curated collection of work by critically acclaimed artist Stephen Simpson this weekend.

The work, which will be on display at Castle Galleries in Meadowhall, has been inspired by the elemental aspects of nature. Simpson’s Efflorescence body of work will be exhibited at the gallery until Sunday September 17.

Using a unique method, the artist’s application of heavy texture blurs the boundary between 2D and 3D sculpture, resulting in a collection of art that presents a depiction of light, colour and energy.

Speaking about his collection, Stephen Simpson said: “The nature of my work is so organic it sometimes takes on a life of its own.

“Before creating this body of work I knew I wanted it to be bold with colour but in keeping with my style, which has naturally developed over the last five years. It had to retain the illusion of light in each painting, giving movement and depth.”

Simpson was drawn to art from an early age and undertook a degree in fine art before accepting an internship at Christie’s Auction House, followed by a full-time position.

Four years at the world’s leading auction house provided him with an opportunity to see some treasured works of art and saw him work with leading specialists in the art world, broadening his knowledge and inspiring him greatly.

Sam Rix, gallery manager for Castle Galleries, Meadowhall, Washington Green Fine Art’s nationwide network of high street galleries, said: “Boldly conceived and skilfully created, Efflorescence is a collection of art that pays homage to the origins of Abstract Impressionism.

“Stephen’s unconventional application of paint presents his audience with an unmatched floral composition, a theme that has recently become synonymous with his art. His work is truly stunning and needs to be viewed in person to be fully appreciated.’’
