Med Tech expertise showcased in the US

Medical Technology strengths from the Leeds City Region have been shared at the global MedTech Conference in San Jose California this week.

A delegation from the region is attending The Med Tech Conference in partnership with the University of Leeds and the Yorkshire and Humber Academic Health Science Network to promote investment opportunities and research partnerships to the influential attendees.

This follows the launch by the Lord Prior of the Leeds City Region Science and Innovation Audit which focused on the region’s specialisms in the high growth sector of Med Tech. Lord Prior cited Leeds City Region as being a great place in the UK for Med Tech businesses to innovate and collaborate.

Professor John Fisher from the University of Leeds, said: “We are confident that the UK – and Leeds City Region – is the one of best places in the world to develop and accelerate medical technologies to improve health and quality of life. At an international conference that brings together the global players, we will be positioning Leeds as a leader in the field to attract future collaborators and investors to the region.”

Kersten England, chief executive of Bradford Council and lead chief executive for business innovation and growth at Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership which is leading the delegation, said: “Last week the important role our region plays in the global Med Tech sector was highlighted by the publication by Government of our Science and Innovation Audit. Therefore it’s clear there are opportunities for our regional economy within this sector, which is expected to grow to be worth $529.8bn globally by 2022

“Therefore it is fantastic that the City Region is attending this global event and raising awareness of both our pedigree within the sector and showcase the world class work of our academic institutions such as the University of Bradford, University of Huddersfield, University of Leeds and University of York and the commercial successes by businesses including DePuy Synthes, Arterius and Steeper.”

The MedTech Conference attracts 2,650 senior medical technology professionals, the majority of which are based in the US. Key themes for this year’s conference include digital and medical collaboration opportunities, 3D printing and robotic assisted surgery.
