29 Yorkshire firms make Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250

Twenty-nine Yorkshire firms have made it onto a table which ranks Britain’s private mid-market growth companies with the biggest sales.

The 29 companies headquartered in Yorkshire, compared to 26 last year, that feature in the Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250 have made a strong contribution to the regional economy. The companies increased combined sales 17% to £6.9bn and operating profits 36% to £434m, and they employ almost 34,000 people.

The biggest mid-market growth company in the region is Malton-based Karro Food Group, the pork processor. It employs more than 3,700 people and is one of only a few meat processors licensed to export to China and America.  Sales grew 12% to an annualised £515m.

This newcomer is one of 10 entrants in Yorkshire that were not on the league table last year, including The Right Fuelcard Company, the Leeds-based fuel card provider; confectionery manufacturer Tangerine Confectionery based in Pontefract; and Huddersfield-based brand implementation agency Principle whose sales increased 51% to £150m.

The companies in Yorkshire appear with businesses from around the UK, including Aston Martin, Holland & Barrett, Travelodge, Lush and The Hut Group.

Andy Wood, partner at Grant Thornton, said: “The UK may be at a pivotal point in its history, but the Top Track 250 clearly demonstrates what can be achieved by exciting dynamic businesses. These companies think locally and act globally, they innovate to grow and embrace an entrepreneurial spirit that this country needs to secure a positive post-Brexit future.

“At Grant Thornton we are seeking to stimulate ideas and actions that can help shape a vibrant UK economy that thrives. We can all learn a lot from the Top Track 250.”
