Star billing for Yorkshire

YORKSHIRE boasts the largest number of Michelin Star restaurants in the UK, according to the latest edition of the Michelin Guide.

The Pipe and Glass Inn in Beverley is the sixth and latest venue in the county to have been awarded the prestigious star, which recognises the finest cooking throughout the world.

Other restaurants in the region’s star line up include The Yorke Arms in Ramsgill, The Burlington at The Devonshire Arms in Bolton Abbey, The Box Tree in Ilkley, The Star at Harome and The Old Vicarage in Sheffield.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “This fantastic news comes in the same week that The Yorke Arms has been named as one of Hardens Guide Top Ten UK Restaurants, Rudding Park has been voted the UK’s number one hotel and the world’s sixth most luxurious hotel and The Burlington at the Devonshire Arms Hotel received its fourth AA Rosette – one of only 25 restaurants in the UK to achieve such a level.

“It really goes to prove that Yorkshire is becoming a culinary force to be reckoned with.”

Derek Bulmer, editor of the Michelin Guide, has sampled the fine fare at all six restaurants, said: “These establishments all offer something a little different, whether that’s country house formality at the Devonshire Arms in Bolton Abbey to more relaxed pub dining at The Pipe and Glass Inn.  But what they all have in common is a commitment to making the best of Yorkshire’s wonderful produce.”

The Michelin Guide for Great Britain & Ireland 2010 also awards Rising Stars to restaurants to watch in the future.  The Black Swan in Oldstead received one of only three awarded this year in the UK.
