Bonfire Night and Fireworks Bonanzas promise to go with a bang

A new laser show will feature at York’s biggest bonfire and firework display at Rawcliffe Country Park on Saturday.

The event and the laser show have been sponsored by York’s Ultra Fibre Optic from TalkTalk and organised by the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, in aid of The Fire Fighters charity.

A large bonfire that will be lit throughout the evening and there will be a professionally organised firework display, the laser show, food stalls, bars, live music and a funfair. The event is the largest Fire Fighters Charity event in North Yorkshire and is expected to draw the biggest ever crowd since it started four years ago.

Bruce Reid, watch manager at Harrogate Fire Station, said: “Building on the success of the last four years, we wanted to make this year’s extravaganza even bigger and better. The support of TalkTalk means we have been able to put on a larger professional pyrotechnic display and include a laser show! Last year, around 5,000 people attended raising more than £14,000 for The Fire Fighters charity. We are expecting to exceed these numbers this year. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable bonfire night and are encouraging people to come along and join in the fun.”

Meanwhile, Bonfire Night celebrations in Leeds are once again set to be marked by six large community bonfires.

In what is always a stand out occasion in the city’s event calendar, public bonfires organised by Leeds City Council will be held at East End Park, Roundhay Park, Woodhouse Moor, Springhead Park in Rothwell, Middleton Park and Bramley Park this evening.

Attracting over 70,000 people each year, the public bonfire at Roundhay Park is the largest held in Leeds. The bonfire on Soldiers Field will be lit at 7.30pm and followed by firework display at 8pm.

Once again, White Rose Shopping Centre will be sponsoring the bonfires at Middleton Park and Rothwell Springhead Park this year. These bonfires along with those at East End Park, Woodhouse and Bramley Park, Moor, will be lit at 7pm, with fireworks starting at 7.30pm.

Cllr Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for environment and sustainability, said: “It fills us with great pride that families of all generations have grown up attending and continue to enjoy our public bonfires as part of the city’s Bonfire Night celebrations.

“I am delighted to say that once again we will be providing six public bonfires across the city, which not offer not only a fantastic fire work display but also a wonderful and safe atmosphere. All of our bonfires are very popular, so we would ask people to travel to their chosen bonfire early, to avoid any disappointment.

“On a final note, I would like to personally thank our parks and countryside team who do such an amazing job each year organising all of our public bonfires.”
