Eighty jobs go after sudden closure of engineering firm

Eighty workers at a Hull engineering firm have lost their jobs after the sudden closure of the company.

Hull Daily Mail reported that bosses gathered staff at Irving Utility Services Ltd last week and told them the base in Amsterdam Road in Sutton Fields Industrial Estate was shutting.

Staff believe they will not be paid for the past month’s work and are each owed between £2,000 and £3,500.

The exact reasons for the shock closure are at this stage unclear but administrators have been called in.

The wife of one worker told Hull Daily Mail: “My husband and his colleagues were called in by bosses on Monday morning when they were told there simply wasn’t any money.

“They were told they had lost their jobs and that they may not even get paid.

“They were all doing lots of overtime to get contracts finished which we thought would be really useful with Christmas approaching.

“Now we realise they probably wanted the contracts completed before going out of business.”

“It has come as a huge shock to everyone. Nobody knows what they are going to do for Christmas now. We have three young children and bills are coming in. But Christmas has been cancelled.
“We are owed a few thousand pounds but we don’t think we will get that now.

“While my husband has already found other work, we will not get any money until after Christmas now.

“We understand the company is now in administration and it is unlikely any of the staff will get paid.”

Administrators O’Haras confirmed the company, which has its main base in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, had gone into administration at the end of October but declined to comment further.
