People: Tax expert joins Dow Schofield Watts to launch new advice service; Senior hire for noise monitoring specialist; and more

A Yorkshire tax adviser with more than 17 years’ experience has joined specialist advisory firm Dow Schofield Watts to launch a new service for individuals, business owners and family investment companies in the region.

Richard Major will lead Dow Schofield Watts Private Client Tax which will help clients with tax planning and compliance including tax returns and accounts.

Major, who started his career with Deloitte and most recently worked for Sagars Accountants in Leeds, will be based at Dow Schofield Watts’ Yorkshire & the North East office in Leeds.

He said: “I joined Dow Schofield Watts as I saw it as a big opportunity to work within a firm with a strong reputation and a highly-regarded team. This gives me a solid foundation to provide a high quality service that is complementary to the group’s existing offering.”

Noise monitoring specialist Cirrus Research has appointed Martin Ellison as sales manager.

Ellison has more than 15 year’s direct sales experience having worked in several sectors including the automotive, manufacturing, construction and engineering acoustic industries.

He will be based at the company’s headquarters in Hunmanby, North Yorkshire, leading a team of 10 staff.

He said: “I’m very excited about this new role and my priorities are to maintain Cirrus’ leading reputation as well as grow the business via our own sales team and distributors in the UK and abroad. There will undoubtedly be challenges such as Brexit to prepare for, but also opportunities, in Eastern Europe and China for instance, that we are very keen to explore.”

Cirrus managing director Daren Wallis added: “2018 is going to be a pivotal year for Cirrus and we are delighted to have Martin on board to lead our expanding sales team. His experience across so many sectors means he has hit the ground running. A property professional who has spent more than seven years working for Associated British Ports in the Humber has taken the step into the agency world with Hull-based Garness Jones chartered surveyors.

Zoe Clarvis joined ABP as a property assistant after adding a post-graduate diploma from the University College of Estate Management to her psychology degree from the University of Hull. She gained experience in the surveying side of the business by working on property management, lease renewals, rent reviews, lettings and customer care for businesses ranging from small fish merchants in Grimsby to major international concerns in Immingham and the burgeoning renewables sector.

As agency surveyor at Garness Jones, she will support the company’s expansion in the office and development sectors as well as in retail and leisure, which is seeing increasing activity as a result of Hull’s City of Culture status.

Clarvis said: “I’ve had a great time with ABP working on a variety of high level projects. I became aware of Garness Jones through their work in the area and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to join them at such an exciting time for businesses in the Humber region.”
