Weekender: Leeds announces live screening of The Charlatans

Leeds Kirkgate Market will host a live screening of The Charlatans homecoming gig, which is taking place in lead singer Tim Burgess’ hometown of Northwich, Cheshire.

The giant screen in the event space will broadcast the live show at the same time as locations in Japan, Buenos Aries and Barcelona on Friday 18 May.

Seven hundred tickets will be available for the event at £5 each, attendees will be automatically entered in to a prize draw to win prizes including the Melting Pot neon sign from the best of album of the same name signed by the band.

There will also be a pair of VIP tickets for Kendal Calling Music festival.

As well as the live screening special guest DJ Howling Wolf, Max Lees of the band Twisted Wheel will be playing all the indie classics.

Food and bars will be trading on the night, including Manjit’s Kitchen, Fat Annie’s, Banh and Mee, Jenny’s Jerk Chicken, Yorkshire Wrap Co, Mr Mackerel, Istanbul Bakery, Teapot Tea and Coffee, Frizza, BeetleJuice and Northern Brewing Co.

Cllr Jonathan Pryor, lead member for markets at Leeds City Council, said: “This is a bit of a coup for Kirkgate so we are really excited to have been chosen to show this massive gig, live, at the same time as countries across the world.

“This will be the first time the event space has been used in this way since we completed the refurbishment so we are really keen to demonstrate what an amazing space it is for events like this. I’m sure the atmosphere will be electric and the audience will also be able to try out the fantastic range of food and drink which is on offer at Kirkgate.”
