People: Promotion at accountancy firm; Board appointment at The Technology Group; and more

Paul Winwood has been made a director at chartered accountancy firm BHP.

He adds to the 15 strong audit partner team, responsible for signing off the firms audits.

Winwood joined BHP’s graduate scheme in the firm’s Sheffield office in 2006 after completing an economics degree at Newcastle University, and qualified as a chartered accountant three years later.

He now looks after an extensive portfolio of clients including regional manufacturers, digital companies, construction firms, SMEs, pension schemes with assets totalling £500m and Prudential Regulatory Authority regulated mutual societies, with investment assets of up to £130m.

Lisa Leighton, partner and head of audit at BHP, which employs more than 300 people across five offices, says: “Paul thoroughly deserves this promotion.

“It also reinforces the success of our graduate recruitment scheme, which has recruited more than 100 trainees over the last eight years alone and the majority of these have gone on to forge extremely successful careers with us.”

An accountancy group has continued its expansion with the launch of Baldwins Forensic Accounting in Yorkshire.

Baldwins Forensic Accounting will provide a range of services to Yorkshire’s business and legal communities, from quantifying damages in civil litigation cases and valuing businesses on divorce, through to investigating alleged fraud.

Former forensic partner at BDO and PKF in Leeds, James Hamilton, will lead the practice in Yorkshire. Together with fellow Directors David Owens and Tanya Wilson he is overseeing the expansion of Forensic Accounting across Baldwins.

Hamilton said: “Unlike most other accountancy practices with a genuine focus on entrepreneur led businesses, we are fortunate enough to have an experienced forensic team in place, and over the next few years with additional recruitment, the aim is to become one of the largest regional providers of forensic accounting services in the UK.”

“Quality forensic accountants help businesses and individuals to save time and costs by investigating and presenting credible assessments in relation to any commercial or family disputes.

“Our national service offering also includes ‘employer covenant’ analysis to help defined benefit pension scheme trustees understand the financial position of employer companies, so I look forward to continuing to work with the fantastic community of pensions lawyers, actuaries and independent trustees in the Yorkshire region”.
