People: Partner promotion at law firm; Internet safety company announces new CEO; and more

Stone King has promoted Polly O’Malley, based in Leeds, to partner.

She joined the firm in 2016 and specialises in all aspects of employment law including commercial clients and with niche expertise in advising the education sector on strategic, contentious and regulatory matters. She is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association, a regular speaker at professional institutions and sits on the Department for Education’s Teaching Regulation Agency.

Leeds-based based internet safety company Smoothwall has named ex-Tesla Georg Ell as its chief executive.

Ell brings with him over a decade of experience in the technology sector, having previously held senior leadership roles at Tesla, Yammer, and Microsoft.

He will lead Smoothwall’s global business, which currently employs over 150 people across UK and USA, as it seeks to grow its market presence and develop its technology.

Ell said: “Keeping people safe online is critical to today’s digital world; in particular, safeguarding our children who face unprecedented threats online including cyber-bullying, radicalisation, and grooming.  I am very proud to join the highly mission-driven team at Smoothwall; at Smoothwall’s heart is keeping all people, but especially children, safe. This is deep-rooted in the company and myself, and I can’t wait to start and drive our mission forward.”

Irwin Mitchell has made two partner appointments in Yorkshire in its latest annual promotions round.

Helen Hutchison in the residential property team in Sheffield has been promoted to partner.

She joined Irwin Mitchell 19 years ago as a secretary before becoming a chartered legal executive on her way to her new partner position.

Leeds-based Jenny Arrowsmith (Employment) becomes a partner in business legal services.
