Lightning strikes causing major rail disruption

Northern rail is advising customers not to travel at this time in the Yorkshire area due to severe infrastructure failure caused by lightning strikes.
There has been a fault with the signalling system between Leeds and York, which means that trains some lines are blocked. As a result, trains between these stations are being delayed and services are being cancelled.
Disruption is expected until at least 3.30pm.
The only services Northern are able to operate at this time in Yorkshire are:
- Sheffield to Lincoln
- Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly
- Hull to Scarborough
All other routes are blocked across area at this time.
A spokesman said: “Unfortunately we are unable to provide road transport due to the scale of the disruption.”
Alternative travel advice for has been issued for passengers.
CrossCountry customers have been informed they can use their tickets on the following routes:
- Virgin Trains between Birmingham New Street and Glasgow Central in both directions
- TransPennine Express via any reasonable route until further notice
- Northern via any reasonable route until further notice
- London North Eastern Railway via any reasonable route until further notice
Ticket restrictions for today have been lifted. Passengers who hold tickets dated for travel today may travel tomorrow if preferred.
Alternative travel advice for London North Eastern Railway customers is to use ticket on CrossCountry services via “any reasonable route.”
Alternative travel advice for TransPennine Express customers is to use tickets with the following operators:
- CrossCountry between Leeds and York
- Northern via any reasonable route
- London North Eastern Railway between Leeds and York
Replacement road transport has been requested at Manchester Piccadilly, Huddersfield, Leeds, York, Hull, Scarborough and Stalybridge.
