Waste management group defers multi-million pound landfill tax bill

Wetherby waste management group Augean is to defer a £10.5m HMRC landfill tax bill handed to the firm’s northern arm earlier this year as it “continues to take all appropriate legal channels to challenge the assessment received.”

Augean, one of the UK’s leading specialist waste management businesses, has this year been hit with several pre-assessment notifications from HMRC for both its Augean North and Augean South divisions. Its northern arm was handed a £10.5m bill in October and its southern arm was handed a £18.4m bill in November, excluding interest.

This morning, the listed firm said it had received agreement from HMRC to the deferment of the payment of tax assessed under the Augean North Limited final tax assessment previously announced until the outcome of the tax tribunal has concluded.

Augean said: “As previously announced, the Board still believes that this assessment is without merit and maintains its position based on the legal advice received and independent reviews of the Group’s systems. The Company continues to take all appropriate legal channels to challenge the assessment received.”
