Plans for £35m aparthotel scheme in York submitted

An aparthotel brand has submitted plans to develop a £35m 152-bed scheme in York city centre.

Aparthotel operator Staycity is proposing the Micklegate  site for its Wilde Aparthotels by Staycity concept, replacing the existing building that currently houses the Jinnah Restaurant, Minster Car Hire Garage and The Micklegate at 127.

If approved, the site would be developed by North Star Investment Management, which is seeking to replace the current building and replace it with a high-quality development housing the 152-apartment Wilde Aparthotel.  The project represents a total investment of £35m.

Wilde Aparthotels is Staycity’s premium brand, the first of which launched in London’s West End in April 2018.

Staycity opened its first property in York in July 2016 on an unused site in Paragon Street. Since opening the 197-apartment premises has proved popular with both tourists visiting York and business guests working in the area.

Staycity intends to roll out the Wilde Aparthotels by Staycity brand across gateway city centre locations throughout Europe, with initial sites in Edinburgh, Manchester and Berlin.

Staycity’s group development director Barry Hickey said: “York has already been a fantastic location for our Staycity Aparthotel brand and we are excited about the prospect of bringing our design-led brand Wilde to this impressive and popular city.”

A spokesperson for North Star Investment Management added: “Attracting the Wilde brand to York is a vote of confidence in the city. This development will regenerate a key gateway site continuing the great improvement the street and area has undergone in recent years and acting as an economic boost to other local businesses too.”

Historically the site was part of the Kennings Garage, but it had been converted into separate units in recent years and a large part of the site is seen as a detractor to the character of the conservation area.

Aparthotels are gaining in popularity amongst travellers who enjoy the convenience of a city centre location combined with a less formal atmosphere than a hotel.
