Property consultancy appointed to ‘iconic’ former NUM headquarters

The former National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) headquarters building is set to be managed by commercial property consultancy Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH).

Following a £5.5m renovation led by property developer Quest Property (Holly Street), the city centre building has been redeveloped as a mixed-use scheme of offices and bars.

Grant Thornton has leased 14,000 sq ft of Grade A office space in the 30,000 sq ft building and is now in occupation having recently relocated from its previous offices.

LSH is responsible for managing the remainder of the building, including three new leisure units. The firm’s instruction includes property management, facilities management, service charge administration and tenant liaison.

The Pitcher and Piano bar as well as the Caribbean-themed restaurant and bar Turtle Bay opened at the end of 2018 and the final unit is expected to be let shortly.

The NUM occupied the building for just four years from 1988-1992 before moving to Barnsley. The building then stood empty for more than two decades and was threatened with demolition in 2006.

Quest Property (Holly Street), part of the Brook Group, has secured a 250-year lease of the premises and the adjacent car park from the NUM.

Greg Barraclough, associate director in the property management team at LSH’s Sheffield office said: “LSH is delighted to have been appointed to manage such a prominent City Centre building, especially given the historical significance that the former NUM building has to Sheffield.

“With Grant Thornton relocating to the City Centre and the three new leisure outfits created, it is sure to play a key part in Sheffield’s vibrant future.”.
