Ex-tourism boss terminated from World Cycling Championship role

Beleaguered ex-tourism boss Sir Gary Verity has been terminated from his director role at the UCI Road World Cycling Championships.

Yorkshire 2019 Ltd, which is set to deliver the race in September 2019, has filed documents with Companies House announcing the termination.

Sir Gary Verity was appointed to the organisation in March 2017. It has received funding and financial support from UK Sport as well as British Cycling.

TheBusinessDesk.com contacted Yorkshire 2019 Ltd for comment, but a spokesman for Yorkshire 2019 told the BBC: “Welcome to Yorkshire is a partner of Yorkshire 2019 and Sir Gary was their appointee to our board.

“In light of Sir Gary’s resignation, Welcome to Yorkshire requested a change to that appointment.”

This follows a difficult year for the former chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire. He left the tourism body in March 2017 after which allegations relating to expenses and managerial behaviour surfaced.

Both aspects are now being investigated in two separate investigations by business advisory company BDO and law firm Clarion.

Verity had said that he was leaving due to health and personal reasons, but the BBC reported he had voluntarily paid back £40,000 to the organisation upon his departure.
