Work to cut M62 congestion nears completion

The new third lane is open to drivers using the M62 junction 27 westbound slip road

A scheme to reduce delays and congestion and improve journey times and safety on two busy junctions in West Yorkshire has reached a milestone.

Work started last year to benefit drivers on the M62 roundabouts and slip roads at junction 27 for Gildersome and junction 28 at Tingley, in a project funded by Highways England and delivered by Leeds City Council.

The improvements at junction 27 have now been completed. Drivers now have an extra lane on the westbound exit slip roads from the M62 and M621 and additional space on the southern roundabout, easing congestion at peak times.

Highways England project manager Esref Ulas said: “At busy times, the congestion at junction 27 was impacting drivers on the M62 main carriageway, and this is an issue which we wanted to address.

“The work will reduce congestion on this vital route, and I want to thank drivers for their patience while the work was taking place.”

Meanwhile, Highways England said work at junction 28 is progressing well and remains on schedule to be completed by the end of the month.

The westbound exit slip road is being extended to four lanes, while the eastbound exit slip road will be widened to three lanes.

At both junctions, road markings and signs have also been improved and replaced, while resurfacing has been carried out on the northern and southern roundabouts and slip roads.
