Yorkshire business signs fuel supply agreement with power station

Leeds-based Associated Waste Management (AWM) has been chosen to be the first business to supply refuse derived fuel to the second of two Energy from Waste plants at Ferrybridge.

Located on the same site as Ferrybridge Multifuel 1, the Ferrybridge Multifuel 2 power station will have a generating capacity of about 70 MW, sufficient to power 180,000 homes. It is capable of treating up to 675,000 tonnes of waste derived fuels each year.

AWM’s 150,000 tonnes per year fuel supply agreement started this week, with its vehicles delivering the very first loads to be tipped into a ground level bunker, which will feed two boiler lines fed by overhead loading cranes.

Hot commissioning of the power station is due to begin shortly and AWM will provide a continuous supply of fuel during the commissioning period.

Tim Shapcott, AWM’s Commercial Director UK, said: “AWM has a long-standing relationship with energy company SSE, supplying Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 since 2016.

“In 2017 the business successfully concluded a deal with Bradford Council to treat, manage and utilise thermal recovery for the 164,000 tonnes of waste over the 15-year life of the contract. Ferrybridge Multifuel 2 has always been at the centre point of this contract and to be present at the very first delivery today was unprecedented.”

In November 2018, AWM was acquired by the Beauparc Utility Group and is now part of a focused UK network of waste businesses, head quartered in Leeds.

Eamonn Hanley, UK Logistics and Operations Director for Beauparc UK, said: “The supply of waste for energy to Ferrybridge Multifuel 2 enables AWM to provide customers with a highly sustainable thermal offtake.

“To support the start of this contract we are progressing well with a £2.5m vehicle roll-out project. We have introduced all new Euro 6 tractor units, that will haul fuel to Ferrybridge and new trailers with hydraulic netting systems.

“The first 14-mile journey to Ferrybridge started at our facility at Stourton, South Leeds. Watching the five-vehicle convoy departing the site was a proud moment and as a business we’re exceptionally pleased to be working in partnership with Multifuelenergy.”

AWM employs more than 250 full time staff across five sites in the Yorkshire region. The company was founded more than 20 years ago and has its headquarters on Gelderd Road, Leeds
