27 Yorkshire companies have been recognised in a Top 250 list that ranks Britain’s private mid-market growth companies with the biggest sales.

Leeds-based construction consultancy Turner & Townsend, Doncaster housebuilder Keepmoat Homes are in the top 10 nationally, with Hessle seafood trader Andrew Marr International ranked 11th in the Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250.

The list features private companies that have grown sales by at least 5% in the last year and have operating margins of at least 2%.

Rachel Engwell, Grant Thornton partner and winner of the Empowering Potential category at TheBusinessDesk.com’s Leadership Awards last year, said: “Whilst the headwinds of political and economic uncertainty have been a consistent feature of the UK economy over the past year, mid-market firms have continued to prove their resilience.

“They’ve demonstrated their adaptability to uncertain times and found opportunities for growth, both at home and abroad.”

There are 27 Yorkshire companies on the 2019 list – up from 23 last year – and between them they employ more than 32,000 people.

The companies increased combined sales 16% to £7.5bn and operating profits 10% to £605m.

Seven Yorkshire companies are making their league table debut, including tyre wholesaler Bond International, Doncaster-based halal chicken supplier Iqbal Poultry, and York’s Vetpartners, which supports more than 400 veterinary clinics across the UK.

Keepmoat Homes moved up from 18th place to 8th overall after growing sales to just under £600m.

Tim Beale, chief executive for Keepmoat Homes said: “I’m delighted that following another fantastic year for the business we have been recognised by this prestigious list and included in the top 10. Our focus for the future remains on delivering more of the high quality new homes the country needs with greater speed and continuing to be a leading homebuilder for first time buyers.”
