Seven-storey mixed use building could replace old coroner’s court

PLANS are being submitted to Sheffield City Council for the redevelopment of the city’s former Coroner’s Court site.
Proposals from Sheffield-based multi disciplinary practice CODA Studios would see the disused court in Nursery Street replaced by a building of up to seven storeys, including 77 apartments and commercial units at ground level.
Those proposals have been recommended for approval by Sheffield Council planning officers.
The CODA team has worked with Firestone Developments, the developers of the site, to find a solution that could save the original 1920s building. But having explored every avenue with planning officers, Firestone Developments said it had decided the only viable way forward was to create a quality new build property.
The business originally bought the building with a previous planning permission which would have allowed for the saving of the court’s front facade, with a new high rise building to the rear.
On closer inspection, however, it was agreed the design would prove too complex and expensive.
Managing director Matt Bowker said: “The team at CODA Studios has worked extremely hard and have drawn up many variations on the scheme from full to partial retention and complete redevelopment.
“Although it is an attractive period property, the Coroner’s Court is not a listed building and does not have conservation status.
“It proved impossible to reach agreement with planning officers on a building that was financially viable and which would at the same time preserve the original building.
“We are now working with Firestone Developments to deliver a high quality new build that will enhance this developing area of the city and help with its continuing regeneration.”
The planning application will go before Sheffield City Council’s Planning Committee today – October 8.
