My Yorkshire: Stacey Dennis, owner of online cards and gifts retailer Love Layla

Stacey Dennis is the owner of Love Layla, an online cards and gifts retailer that operates in the UK and overseas.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I live in Pontefract, but am originally from Leeds.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

Whitby – mainly because it’s not as commercialised as the other seaside resorts, but still has the Arcades. I’m a massive fan of the 2p machines and have taught my daughter Layla how to do the “Quick Fire” technique. Although give me fresh doughnuts, ice cream and fish and chips and I’m there!

What is still on your “to-do” list in the region?

The Otley Run – I have never done it. By run, I mean the drinking. I survived my time as a student in Leeds without achieving it.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?

I was treated to a meal at the Black Swan in Oldstead as I had always wanted to try a Michelin starred restaurant. The food there was incredible with 10 courses of fantastic flavours I had never known existed. I had to lie down for a long time afterwards.

What is your most Yorkshire trait?

My accent for sure – the fact that I don’t pronounce “H’s” is apparent to everyone I meet.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region?

Sheffield has the highest ratio of trees to people in Europe. Wow.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

Yorkshire Puddings. There can’t be any other serious contenders. But there is a certain type I like, that are soggy in the middle, crispy around the top, bowl-shaped and full of gravy. Get in my belly!

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?

The M62 when you pass the border of Yorkshire and the road sign shows you entering Lancashire. Then you know you’re in unknown territory!

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?

Cadburys – because we already have Haribo! Bring all the chocolate to God’s Own County.

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

Is this a serious question?
