Contractor hired for £9.3m extra care development

Retirement accommodation provider Housing 21 has appointed national contractor Tolent to a £9.3m extra care development in Filey, North Yorkshire, which will see 70 homes created.

Built over two storeys, the development will include a mix of one and two bedroom apartments with community facilities to support residents including a lounge, salon, café and garden space.

This is the fourth extra care scheme that Tolent has built for Housing 21, other schemes have included Keelboat Lodge and Springtide Cove in Sunderland and the latest one is Fry Court in Great Ayton which is due for completion in early 2020.

Having worked in collaboration with Housing 21 through a full development service from land acquisition to handling the legal process, Tolent will be starting on site in January 2020.

Commercial director for Tolent, Paul Walker said: “Our overarching aim is to support clients in achieving their goals and it’s fantastic to know that we’ve done that once again with Housing 21 on this latest development.

“From retirement villages, dementia specific care homes to supported living bungalows, we’ve delivered over £100m of work in this sector in the past few years alone and it’s an area of our business that continues to grow.”

The development will be built on land at Filey Fields Farm on Scarborough Road, and is due for completion in spring 2021.

Housing 21 is a not-for-profit provider of Retirement Housing and Extra Care for older people of modest means. The organisation currently has one of the largest build programmes for older people’s housing in England.

Clare Hemming, senior property development manager at Housing 21, said: “We are excited to be on site in Filey – our tenth Extra Care scheme in North Yorkshire.

“This scheme will provide much needed high quality affordable homes for older people in the area. It will also offer care and support services based on each resident’s needs. There will be a café/bistro, hair salon and social activities which will all be available to the wider community.

“We’re confident this scheme will be a great resource for the local community.”
