Council accepts plans for events venue and industrial units on derelict site

Plans for a multi-million pound exhibition and events centre for a vacant site in Bradford have been approved by councillors.

The proposals for the events and function centre, ten industrial units and a 188-space car park were backed by members of Bradford Council’s Regulatory and Appeals Committee, despite council officers claiming the plans should be rejected.

Ingleby Developments submitted the application late in 2018, outlining how the scheme would create 100 jobs and feature investment worth up to £6m. The venue would be used to host weddings as well as functions, exhibitions and conferences.

The site, on Princeroyd Way, has been allocated as a possible future waste management site for the Bradford District. Council officers cited this allocation as a reason why the application should be refused.

And they also argued that such a development should be located in the city centre instead.

However, councillors disagreed, saying they were not willing to turn down such a big investment.

And the applicants successfully argued that as no waste companies had shown interest in the site, which has been vacant for 37 years, they should be permitted to build there.

Because the land is allocated as a waste management site, the council’s decision will still need to be passed to the Secretary of State before the full consent is given.
