Updated homes plan for barracks site to go public

Residents of Ripon, in North Yorkshire are being invited to help shape future plans for the city’s barracks site.

As announced last July, land at Claro and Deverell Barracks in Ripon could be developed to provide 1,300 new homes.

Last Autumn, Homes England carried out consultation to inform the redevelopment proposals for the barracks site in Ripon, with a view to submitting an outline planning application. All the information shared by the public at the events as well as from follow up meetings with a range of local groups has been collated.

Homes England says it welcomes the level of interest shown in the proposals on what is says is a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to influence the re-development of the Barracks site into Clotherholme urban village.

A fresh round of engagement with local groups in the city is being arranged for April, so the planning application will be the most suitable scheme possible for the site.

Meetings with key stakeholders, including the city council, will also take place, and the final proposals for the site will go on public display.

Martin Wilks, the Homes England project manager said: “We have decided to carry out additional engagement as part of our ongoing commitment to develop a masterplan that creates a positive new urban extension to Ripon at Clotherholme urban village.

“It is equally important that the masterplan contributes socially, economically and sustainably to Ripon.

“It is vital that we make sure that our plans help meet the future housing and employment needs of the city of Ripon, without changing the special character of the city.

“We will refine our proposals with a view to submitting an outline application during this spring, and we will shortly publish more details of when and where the public information events will happen”.

Councillor Rebecca Burnett, Harrogate Borough Council cabinet member with responsibility for planning, said: “It is good to see there is so much engagement on the future of the barracks site.

“I am delighted the local community is being given such an opportunity to shape the final proposals before a planning application is submitted.

“I am very keen that Clotherholme urban village reflects and integrates with the city’s communities and maximises the wider benefits to Ripon as a whole.”
